Danish Minister of Trade visits NLMK DanSteel
On Monday, 18 November 2013, Danish Minister of Trade and European Affairs Nick Hækkerup held a working meeting with the management of NLMK DanSteel, Denmark’s largest steelmaker that is part of NLMK Europe Plate Division.
The Minister got acquainted with NLMK DanSteel operations, where a new rolling mill was launched in December 2012, allowing the plant to begin the production of high-strength thick plates for use in the construction of offshore windmills and oil & gas platforms.
Yuriy Tarasov, NLMK Europe Plate Commercial Director, and Yuriy Bokachev, NLMK DanSteel Managing Director, introduced the Minister to the Division’s and the plant’s plans aimed at growing the share of NLMK’s high value-added steel products in niche European markets, including the North European wind energy market.
Also in attendance was Helge Friis, Mayor of the Halsnæs municipality, where NLMK is the main employer.
Earlier, on 12 November 2013, NLMK DanSteel signed a Declaration on Cooperation with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the Lipetsk State Technical University and the Halsnaes Municipality (Frederiksvaerk, Denmark), aimed at boosting the efficiency of thick plate production at NLMK DanSteel for the manufacture of offshore windmills and constructions.
The parties joined efforts to identify & implement innovative process solutions that will reduce the environmental footprint of plate production, expand the lifetime and reliability of offshore constructions, as well as bring down manufacturing cost.
This Declaration sets forth an efficient cooperation mechanism between Denmark’s leading steel product manufacturer, NLMK DanSteel, and leading research and development centers, aimed at tackling the ambitious challenge of providing the country with high-strength thick plates for use in the manufacture of offshore windmills and constructions.
In December 2012, NLMK DanSteel completed the revamp of its rolling mill and started production at its new 4.2 m heavy plate stand, adding new products to the company’s portfolio. The EUR 120-million worth project is part of the company’s strategy to leverage its strong position in the plate markets.
